Hey there everyone, Hang in there -- this is long!
Ok, I want to get into a no-holds barred breakdown of my situation and I would appriciate ANY feedback, advice, comments or thoughts. Here we go...
In June of 2002, I started to notice some minor "ear fullness" when I was listening to music in my car. Turning down the volume a bit would get rid of the problem. This happened ON and OFF. It only happened in my right ear.
In August 2002, I had a "middle ear infection". I was dizzy, my ears were sore and I couldn't do anything. I was in bed for a week and off of work. That eventually got better, and I was able to continue my day-to-day life.
In September 2002, I was pushed into a swimming pool. I remember that my ears didn't go back to normal for days after.
The ear fullness continued to be on & off in my right ear -- I didn't think much of it. I went to an ENT who told me that I was fine and to take some Nasaonex.
In December of 2002, I went to a concert -- It was LOUD. Just like the other concerts I went to. My ears were fine. Didn't feel full. I had ringing after, but again.. normal concert experience for me.
Around February of 2003, I started to notice that noises were bothering me. My right ear would get full all the time when it was around "loud" noises. Then I developed a "ticking" noise. I still have it to this day, heck.. even as I type this on the keyboard, I can feel the "ticking" in my right ear. The ticking leads to ear fullness which leads to pain and a feeling of being damaged.
Over the course of the year, the sound sensitivty has been up and down. Dishes being stacked together out of the dishwasher hurt my ears. Loud music sounds distorted and hurts my ears. Talking on the phone, my ear starts to "tick". It's weird.. when I hear some external sounds my ear will "tick, tick, tick, tick".. as it processes the sounds. I picture it as the little anvil in my ear hitting the ear drum an extra time for each sound it hears...
I complained to my doctor, who sent me to 3 more ENT's -- yes, they ALL looked in my ears and put me in a hearing booth (great hearing by the way) and they all said the same thing -- "Your fine... wear ear plugs when it's to noisy". Gee, thanks..
I decided that I'd look into the TMJD area -- Wow.. turns out I do have a small TMJD problem in my right side -- oh wow, thats the side that bugs me the most. Yeah, so I wore that mouthpeice for 6 months to NO AVAIL. No change.. no difference.. I am out $800 bucks.
My doctor thinks I am crazy -- puts me on Celexa and tells me to not think about it so much. I admit, not every sound bothers me. Then, some some days sounds that bugged me yesterday are fine. For example, now my ears are not "ticking" or "clicking" to the sound of the keyboard.
So, here I am.. some days are good, some days are bad. I had a Poker Night last weekend, 6 guys around a table. My ears didn't hurt for the most part, but when I awoke the next day my right ear was full and painful -- Same when I go to a quite bar and have a group of people around me talking. I am OK during, but the next day I pay for it.
Just the other day, I went to the movies for the first time in a year. I brought my ear plugs, but I didn't put them in -- I was on a date. Anyways, whatever... The movie didn't bother me. There were some parts that I remember were loud and my ears made that "distorted" sound. I was fine though.. that was 2 days ago. My right ear is STILL "full" and I have soreness in that ear primarliy, and the odd pain in the left ear...
The "ticking" is weird. I know it come from my right ear, but I get it in my left ear as well. For example, if I plug my right ear... the ticking in the left ear stops. If I plug my left ear, I can still feel the ticking in my left ear as my right ear processes sound. When I am on the phone, I only hear it in my right ear...
I am 24 years old, and I know I am not as bad off as some of you are..
I can't accept that this is Hyperacusis, and I will tell you why. Not ALL sounds bother me -- My fridge is fine, the fan on my computer is no problem... it's certain noises that makes my ears tick. I feel that the ticking leads to ear fullness which leads to pain. When my ears tick, and I walk away from a situation they seem to be ok. The longer i am in the situation, the longer I pay. Things that used to never bother me though, I can't even do anymore (the bars, clubs, movies etc...)
I feel that this is a problem with my Eustatian Tubes OR Stapedial Myoclonus. The Myoclonus would explain the "ticking" noise that I hear. I also know that people with Stapedial Myoclonus expereicne sensitivity to noise as well.
I feel this could be Eustatian Tube related, because my ears are always popping, changing pressure, cracking and I get distortion sometime as well. I am not 100% sure what role the Eustatian Tubes play in my hearing, or if blockage or problems with them can cause sound sensitivity or any of my other symptoms besides fullness.
My doctor has given up on me. He will not send me to another ENT. I have written him a letter to ask him for an appointment with a Neoruologist, as I know people with Myclonous see them for treatment... Besides, I give up on ENT's.
I do have Tinnitus as well -- Notice it when it's quite. Mine sounds like wind. Also, I notice that if I sit down and then stand up, my "wind sound" get louder and stays that way for a second. Could this be caused by blood flow issues? Heck, could ALL of this be from blood flow issues?
I am not confident that I have been checked as well as I should be, and after reading a lot of what you guys say on here.. I feel I share some of the symptoms with you guys, but I am not sure it's Hyperacusis.
I am able to keep my career, and go on most of the day without problems... I am just not sure what the heck is going on, and I know my future in my eyes looks bleak... Like I said, I am 24 years old and I stay home more then my grandmother does...
Another concern I have is this -- When my original ear problems started in 2002, I have been looking up stuff online. Hyperacusis was one of the things that I found, and I was an avid reader of this network. Is it possible that my ear fullness is a problem, but I have turned it into a "fear of sounds". Have I made it so my ears actually HURT when I hear certain sounds.. Is this possible?
Help me.. If you have any comments, questions, anything -- Please share them! What can I do? What should be my next step?
Thanks for taking the time to read my story...
Here is a complete list of symptoms:
- Ear Fullness (right ear)
- Ear Pain (mostly right ear)
- Ear "clicking" when processing external sounds (mostly right ear)
- Ear Popping, Cracking, Change of pressure
- Sensitivity to sounds (not everything)
- Tinnitus (only when it's quite -- which I think I've had all my life)
Thank you,
Jamie
